As many as eight people could be left homeless after a fire ripped through a building in Little Italy on Saturday.

Ottawa fire officials say the fire began at 57 Preston St., between Primrose Avenue and Elm Street, which led to multiple 911 calls. When firefighters arrived, they called a second alarm.

The fire was contained to one bedroom and a balcony, fire officials said. There was some damage to the buildings at 55 and 59 Preston, as well.

The building suffered extensive damage, but there were no reported injuries. Workers with the Salvation Army and Canadian Red Cross responded to help the eight people who could be homeless due to the fire damage.

No cause has been determined.

The total damage is estimated at $150,000.

Police also closed Preston Street between Somerset and Albert streets as they investigated.
