Ottawa fire crews have rescued an injured man from an east Ottawa church tower.

Ottawa Fire Services spokesperson Marc Messier said they were called to Our Lady of Assumption church at 320 Olmstead St. in Vanier just after 2 p.m. after a male contractor suffered an electric shock in the bell tower.

He said the man was conscious, but injured and unable to move.

Messier said fire crews used ropes and a basket to get the man down from the approximately 30-foot tower and transport him to hospital.

There is no information on the extent of his injuries but he is expected to survive.

Hydro Ottawa said there was a forced outage for safety reasons affecting over 5,800 customers at its peak.
