Ontario's police watchdog is investigating after a man died in a crash just south of Renfrew Thursday afternoon at the end of a short police pursuit.

Ontario Provincial Police said an officer at the Killaloe detachment was conducting traffic enforcement at about 1:12 p.m. Thursday on Highway 41, just south of Renfrew, when a vehicle was stopped for speeding.

The officer got out of the vehicle but when approaching the car, police said the male driver sped off.

The police cruiser followed for a short period but the vehicle would not stop, police added. After the officer stopped following, the suspect vehicle was found on Stone Road in the Township of Admaston Bromley involved in a crash.

The driver, who was the only person in the vehicle, died at the scene.

Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit is investigating because there was a death and police had earlier been involved in a pursuit.
