Family of 7 homeless after Sandy Hill floor fire
Two other children were also guests at the time
A family of seven is homeless after a fire flared up underneath the floor of a home just outside downtown Ottawa Wednesday night.
Ottawa Fire Services officials said in a news release they were called to a home in the 50 block of Sweetland Drive in Sandy Hill around 6:30 p.m. because people there smelled smoke.
When fire crews arrived, they said they found a fire in the floor area of an addition to the home, along with a crawl space below.
They said crews had to open up a large section of the floor to check for and put out all of the hot spots.
Two adults and seven children ages two to 10 will be displaced because of the fire. Two of those children were guests.
The Salvation Army and Red Cross’ emergency response team will be helping the family going forward, according to the news release.
Nobody was injured and the cause of the fire, which did an estimated $55,000 damage to the building and its contents, is under investigation.
