A 45-year-old man is facing charges for fleeing the scene of a Saturday night crash that left a 16-year-old boy driving a snowmobile in critical condition.
It happened at 10 p.m. on 8th Line Road near Glenwood Drive, just outside of Metcalfe.
The boy was thrown a "considerable distance" by the force of the crash, paramedics said in a media release.
He was semi-conscious and suffering from critical multi-system trauma with head, torso and leg injuries.
Snowmobile struck while trying to cross road
The boy was heading south on 8th Line, on the west shoulder, as the driver was heading north on the same road. As the snowmobile tried to cross the road, it was struck by the vehicle, Ottawa police said in a media release.
The driver fled the scene, but was apprehended by police a short time later.
The driver is now facing charges including impaired driving, failure to remain at the scene of a collision, dangerous driving causing bodily harm, breach of probation and obstructing police.
Officers controlled the intersection while paramedics were working on the boy, then escorted the ambulance to the Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario.
There was no update on the boy's condition as of late Sunday afternoon.
The collisions unit is investigating.
