A 24-year-old man has been charged with dooring in a fatal Jan. 11 crash in the ByWard Market that left the driver of a scooter pinned under a truck.

Witnesses previously told CBC News that the driver of the scooter was dragged by a pickup truck and then pinned underneath it after hitting an open car door on Cumberland Street at Clarence Street. The 66-year-old man was declared dead at the scene.

Ottawa police said in a news release Monday that the driver of the car "opened his door unsafely" after parking on Cumberland Street, causing the scooter driver to be thrown into the path of a passing truck.

The charge has not been proven in court.
