A one-and-a-half-year old dog has died in a veterinary hospital after he was shot with a crossbow in west Quebec Thursday.

Police in the Outaouais said just before 10 a.m. Thursday, the dog was shot "point blank" behind a home on Périnault Street in Val-des-Monts, Que., north of Gatineau.

The male dog named Jessie James, though wounded, was able to return home and its owners saw the bolt in its chest.

The dog's owners first brought him to the Gatineau SPCA but he was then sent to an Ottawa veterinarian.

The dog died shortly after midnight.

Police arrested a 30-year-old man. The suspect will likely face several charges, police said.
