Ottawa police have laid charges in a 2012 robbery after matching a two-year-old DNA sample to a man recently convicted of a separate robbery.

Police said on May 8, 2012, two men with concealed faces — one of whom was carrying a knife — walked into a fast food restaurant in the 1500 block of Merivale Road and took an undisclosed amount of cash and also the money from a tip jar before fleeing. No one was injured.

A piece of physical evidence was recovered and submitted to the Centre of Forensic Sciences and entered the National DNA database, where it was kept with evidence gathered from other unsolved crimes.

Staff Sgt. Mike Haarbosch with the Ottawa police robbery unit said when an Ottawa man was convicted in Nov. 2013 of robbery, his DNA was sent to the database and it matched the 2012 sample.

Devin Allen, 21, of Ottawa, was arrested Tuesday and charged with two counts of robbery, wearing a disguise and conspiracy. He is scheduled to appear in court Wednesday.
