Two women are dead and a man was airlifted to hospital in serious condition after a head-on crash on Dalmeny Road in rural south Ottawa early Thursday morning.

The two-vehicle crash between an SUV and a car happened at 7 a.m. on Dalmeny Road near Swale Road, south of the community of Metcalfe, Ottawa police said.

The westbound SUV was trying to pass another vehicle on the wet single-lane road, where the speed limit is 80 km/h, when the SUV struck the car in the oncoming lane, according to Ottawa police Duty Insp. John Medeiros.

The two women in the car were pronounced dead at the scene. One of them women was 40 years old and the other was 67, Medeiros said.

It took firefighters about 30 minutes to extricate a 34-year-old man trapped in the SUV.

He suffered serious leg and back injuries and was airlifted to hospital in an Ornge air ambulance. His life is not in danger, paramedics said.

3rd vehicle swerved, crashed through fence

Three other people were in the SUV at the time, Medeiros said.

Two of them suffered lesser injuries and were taken to hospital in ambulances. Their injuries are not life-threatening, paramedics said.

Another car swerved to avoid the crash and went through a fence, but the driver suffered only minor injuries and did not need to be taken to hospital.

The Ottawa police collision investigations unit is handling the case.

Ottawa police Duty Insp. John Medeiros said Dalmeny Road was expected to be closed until sometime Thursday afternoon. (CBC)

"They'll examine the location of the accident, and that combined with witness statements, they'll figure out exactly what transpired this morning. So it is a bit premature to be able to say exactly what happened," Medeiros said.

"It's a serious collision, absolutely."

Motorists are asked to avoid the area. Dalmeny Road is closed between Bank Street and Swale Road.
