A 20-year-old man has been charged with first-degree murder after police found the body of a little girl in a Cornwall, Ont., home early Thursday morning.

Shane Haley of Cornwall is accused of killing five-year-old Alissa Martin-Travers and will remain in police custody until a court appearance scheduled for Friday, said a Cornwall Community Police Service news release.

Police found the girl's body, which they said showed "obvious signs of trauma," while responding shortly after 1:30 a.m. to a call at a home on Cumberland Street. The girl lived there with her mother and a 16-month-old sibling, police said.

An autopsy is to be performed in Toronto Friday to determine the cause of death.

The accused is an acquaintance of the victim's mother, police said.

After finding the body, police cordoned off the area, which was visited through the day by neighbours such as Nicky Scharf.

Scharf left a teddy bear at the home two doors down from her own, where she babysat the little girl until two years ago.

"She was such a little sweetheart. I can't believe it actually happened to her," Scharf said, adding that the child's mother was very caring and the children were well taken care of.
