City of Ottawa sports fields won't open until May 22
Only baseball/softball fields will open May 12
Local sports clubs are adjusting their 2014 schedules after the city announced it won't be opening sports fields until May 22.
Ball diamonds were supposed to have opened in the first week of May, but are now set to open on May 12 if "the current weather trends continue," said Dan Chenier, the city's general manager of parks, recreation and cultural services.
He said a late spring and lots of rain are to blame for the delays.
People are asked to stay off sports fields and general turf areas in parks until May 22. The city wants to prevent damage to fields by giving them more time to dry out and establish grass.
