Charges laid after hostage situation with child
Five people have been charged after a hostage situation Friday in Ottawa in which a man barricaded himself inside a home with a small child.
Ottawa police's domestic unit said two people have been charged with parental abduction and obstruction, while three other people were charged with obstruction.
All the identities are under a publication ban.
All five accused appeared in court Saturday and were remanded into custody. They will return to court Monday and Tuesday.
Standoff ended Friday evening
Police said they responded at 12:30 p.m. ET to a home on Noranda Avenue, near St. Laurent Boulevard and Montreal Road, to assist an outside agency on a non-criminal matter.
The man responded by locking himself in the basement of the house with the child.
Police continued to talk with the man until the situation ended at around 5:30 p.m.
The man was taken into custody and had minor injuries. The child was transported to the Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario.
