Canada Day 2015 in Ottawa area communities

If you don't want to spend Canada Day on Parliament Hill, there's likely a celebration taking place in your community.

Smaller, more intimate events from Dunrobin to Orleans

Not everyone wants to spend Canada Day jostling for a great space on Parliament Hill to see the music and the fireworks.

Here are some of the smaller, more community-minded celebrations dotting the Ottawa area this year.

Almonte: all day, starting at 9 a.m. Events include kayak and canoe races, a car show in downtown Almonte, and fireworks at dusk.

Barrhaven: Mattamy Homes Canada Day at Clarke Fields, 93 Houlahan Rd., 11 a.m. - 11 p.m. Festivities will feature food vendors, music and multicultural stages, and a kids zone.

ByWard Market: Zaphod's Annual No Stress Canada Day Celebration at Zaphod Beeblebrox, all day, starting at 3 p.m. DJs and dancing. 

Dunrobin: 4-10 p.m. Events include a dog agility course and musical performances.

Greely: Greely Community Centre, all day. Events include a firefighting demonstration and fireworks.

Jacques Cartier Park (Gatineau): Activities run from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. including face painting, inflatable fun and more.

Kanata: Glenview Homes Canada Day at the Kanata Recreation Complex, all day. Music, fireworks, plus a visit from the 2015 Pan Am torch relay.

Manotick: Watson's Mill Dominion Day, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The mill will be hosting a traditional picnic with carnival games for children and historical reenactments.

Orleans: Greater Orleans Canada Day Celebration at the Navan Fairground, all day starting at 11 a.m. Highlights include a lineup of local music, a beer tent, food and fireworks.

Osgoode Village: 5560 Osgoode Main St., all day. Dog show, children's activities, and fireworks.

Oxford Mills: Maplewood Park, 11:30 a.m. - 4 p.m. Events include live music, a market, face painting, and a silent auction for the Oxford Mills Community Association.

Stittsville: Sacred Heart High School, 3-10 p.m. There will be horse-drawn wagon rides, an afternoon magic show, free Canada Day birthday cake, and fireworks.

Vernon: all day, starting at 12 p.m. Events include a ukulele jam session, a euchre tournament, and fireworks at dusk.
