A 16-year-old boy was taken to hospital with life-threatening head injuries after he was hit by a vehicle on Smyth Road close to his high school on Monday morning.

The boy was struck in the 700 block of Smyth Road just before 11:30 a.m., paramedics said.

He lost consciousness after he was struck and was semi-conscious by the time paramedics arrived. He was taken to hospital in critical condition.

Ottawa police are investigating.

The westbound lanes of Smyth are closed between Dauphin Road and Lynda Lane.

The boy is a student at École secondaire catholique Franco-Cité at 623 Smyth Rd.
