A Hydro Quebec employee discovered a body in the Gatineau River at a dam in Cantley, about 25 kilometres northeast of Gatineau, Wednesday morning.
MRC des Collines police will look at missing persons reports as part of the investigation, said Const. Martin Fournel, who did not provide any additional details about the body.
"We're not going to disclose any more information about if it's a male or a female. This type of investigation needs time and that is why we will let our people do their job before we disclose any more information," he said.
Fournel said it's "hard to tell" how long the body has been in the river and it's "way too early" to know how it ended up there.
"We will have a better idea when the body is taken out of the water," he added.
"It could be suspicious. It could be suicide. It could be something else, so the door is open," he said. "We don't know but we want to know what happened."
Fire crews were called in to help remove the body, which was found near the shoreline.
An autopsy will be scheduled for this week.
