Some shop owners at the Train Yards shopping complex say the expected closure of one of the entrances for nearly two years will likely be a blow to their businesses.
To connect the city's light rail transit line to the maintenance and storage facility off Belfast Road, Rideau Transit Group is closing Belfast Road from Coventry Road to Trainyards Drive, beginning on May 20 and continuing until spring 2016.
For drivers entering the Train Yards shopping complex, it means they won't be able to enter from one entrance on Belfast Road.
Salon Elegance co-owner Tony Dagher said free parking and easy access brings in customers.
"It's very disappointing because our clients coming to an appointment won't know the routing or detour that will be chaos we might be losing clients out of that," said Dagher.
Shepherd's Fashion Accessories owner Marlene Shepherd said she isn't overly worried, but wants the city to post large re-routing signs towards other entrances.
Shepherd said entry points on Industrial Avenue will likely see more congestion and she hopes the city re-examines traffic flows.
"I know we've been struggling with some of the traffic lights here at Train Yards maybe with the closing they'll have to re-look at that and review the lights," said Shepherd.
Alta Vista Councillor Peter Hume said the bulk of traffic on the section of Belfast Road is from shoppers.
"All of the traffic moving through that neighbourhood now is accessing that Trainyards Road ..it's going to require an awful lot of patience on their part," he said.
A previous version of this story stated that for drivers entering the Train Yards shopping complex, it means they won't be able to enter from Belfast Road. In fact, it means that only one access off Belfast Road will be closed.Apr 23, 2014 10:54 AM ET
