A dog beaten nearly to death with a shovel last week outside an Ottawa home is recovering and will have surgery soon.

Breezy, an 18-month-old Labrador-shepherd cross, suffered life-threatening injuries in the Oct. 16 attack.

She is now in stable condition and has been going for walks and eating on her own.

On Thursday, the Ottawa Humane Society said the dog had pre-surgery X-rays of her skull.

Man faces multiple charges in attack

Ottawa Humane Society agents were called to a Manor Park home on Oct. 16.

Witnesses reported a man repeatedly kicking and beating the dog with a rake and shovel in front of a house at Barclay Road and Eastbourne Avenue.

The dog suffered serious head and chest injuries in the attack.

Steven Helfer, 24, is facing multiple charges in connection with the incident.
