The Ontario Fire Marshal's office and the Ottawa police arson unit are investigating an early morning fire that destroyed an abandoned school building on the former site of CFB Rockcliffe.

The fire began at about 3:15 a.m. Monday when someone called 911 reporting flames at 503 Foxview Place near the intersection of Montreal Road and the Aviation Parkway.

The building was completely engulfed so firefighters were forced to battle the blaze from outside. They continue to battle the fire and they expect to do so throughout the day.

An excavator was also expected to arrive at the site to help open up new areas of the building to ensure all fires are out.

Firefighters also protected the surrounding grass from spreading the massive fire as it continued to burn.

Neither the exact cause nor the total damage estimate is available yet. There are no injuries reported.

The school is located on the site, which is set for redevelopment.

Canada Lands Company is moving forward with redevelopment plans after reaching agreement with the Algonquins of Ontario. A public consultation is scheduled for Nov. 26.
