If your ears are hungry for some live music and you need to kick-start your weekend with a little … oomph, head to City Hall! Ottawa-slash-Detroit's Delbert & the Commotions play for FREE Friday night at Tulip Fest. It's a wonderful fusion of Motown and O-town. Delbert Nelson is lead vocalist in the legendary Funk Brothers, and appeared in the film Standing in the Shadows of Motown. Brian Asselin is the band leader and sax player. On the latest Delbert & The Commotions record he lead 21 Ottawa musicians through the rigours of funk! Rain or shine at Tulip Fest Friday night, I can't imagine the crowd will be standing still — especially when locals Peptides kick things off

Soaring through the Black Sheep Inn this weekend is the gorgeous voice of an Islander — now Haligonian — who just took a Juno Award home to the Maritimes last month. Take a listen to Rose Cousins singing  "All the Time It Takes to Wait."

It's a tune true to Rose Cousins' form: deeply personal and poignant. It's actually a great piece of music for Mental Health Week this week, so go buy the song on iTunes! Even better, go see Rose play it live north of Ottawa at the Black Sheep Inn in Wakefield Friday night. She's playing Saturday but that's already sold out.

And, if I have my way, she may be getting up on stage Sunday afternoon with Kathleen Edwards.

Edwards is playing in the opposite direction of Rose: south of Ottawa at the Perth Studio Theatre. It's a rare solo show you won't want to miss. Kathleen's sharing the stage with sort-of-local author Iain Reid. His new book is called The Truth About Luck and The Globe & Mail gave it a rave review. I'll see you in Perth as I'll be the host for the show. It starts at 3:00 pm. Kelly's Flowers in Perth is where you can buy your tickets: 613-267-7065.

Another family-friendly event this weekend is also at 3 p.m. Sunday in Ottawa. Local singer-songwriter trio of fathers Hey Buster! have a CD release at Westboro Legion. Listen to In Town & Out Saturday for a chance to win one of their CDs!

One last show to mention in town this weekend: Nightbox is playing at Zaphod's Friday night. It's a cool story about some Ontario lads who met their bandmates in high school in Ireland. The whole band is now Toronto-based and on tour. This tune is a great way to punch up your morning: "Pyramid" from Nightbox.
