2nd Little Italy condo construction site fire deemed suspicious
2 fires at Mastercraft Starwood condo sites in less than 3 weeks
"We're right now looking at two attacks on the same company within a short time period," said Ottawa police Sgt. Dave Christie on Friday. "We're going to be working with the owners of the company and seeing if they have any information they can provide in regards to motive."
The latest fire broke out at 500 Preston St., near Carling Avenue, just before 2:30 a.m. Several people called 911 to report that a wooden construction trailer was on fire.
No one was hurt.
Christie said a witness reported seeing several people yelling and running away from the fire. There was no detailed description of any suspects.
The construction trailer, nine metres long and three metres wide, sustained about $10,000 in damage. Christie said he believes a flammable liquid was used to help start the fire, but has to wait for a sample to be analyzed for confirmation.
500 Preston St. is the site of developer Mastercraft Starwood's 30-storey condominium, Soho Italia, which is under construction.
First fire happened just blocks away
The 20-storey Soho Champagne luxury condo building, which is also under construction, is just three blocks away from the site of the latest fire.
The March 24 fire caused about $100,000 in damage to the trailer and $50,000 to its contents. A 180-kilogram propane tank next top the trailer had to be kept cool by fire crews as the fire was extinguished.
No one was injured.
Fire officials said there were signs of forced entry at the site. Surveillance video obtained by police did not provide any possible suspects, Christie said.
