Twenty-five years ago today, the last Canadian dollar bill was printed, part of the transition full-time to the unloved loonie coin.

For CBC Rewind we went back a quarter of a century into our archives for a story that aired on the National on April 20, 1989.

The whole segment, which can be viewed in the video above, will also air this weekend on Our Ottawa, CBC’s weekly magazine show.

Our Ottawa airs every Saturday at 6 a.m., as well as Sundays and Mondays at 11 a.m. The Easter Sunday show is airing at a special time of 2 p.m. ET.

Also this week on Our Ottawa with host Lucy van Oldenbarneveld:

  • Interviews with Shu Ying Li and Armine Kassabian from Opera Lyra's Madame Butterfly.
  • A profile of Bill Dawson, a 90-year-old volunteer at the Bruyere Continuing Care unit.
  • A look at who's coming to Ottawa for the 20th year of Chamberfest.
  • A new Ottawa bar brings pinball and perogies together with live music.
