Ottawa police said a pair of large brawls in the city's downtown area sent two men to hospital overnight.

Ottawa police say two men were taken to hospital after two large brawls in the city’s downtown area overnight.

Police said the first happened at about 9 p.m. at the intersection of Osgoode and Nelson streets near the University of Ottawa.

There were an unknown number of men involved, police said. A friend took one of the men to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Police said the second brawl happened at around 1:55 a.m. on York Street in the ByWard Market involving a group of 10 men.

There was a possible weapon used in the confrontation, which sent one man to hospital with minor injuries.

Police said neither of these incidents is related to the fatal stabbing on Besserer Street early Saturday morning.

An 18-year-old high school student died in that incident.
