2 dead in fatal crash on dangerous stretch of Highway 17

A fatal crash along a dangerous stretch of Highway 17 has killed two people and closed the road near Chalk River, police say.

Two people are dead and another three were injured after a two-vehicle crash on Highway 17 just east of Chalk River, police say.

Ontario Provincial Police said shortly before 8:30 a.m. westbound car collided with an eastbound transport truck between Highway 41 and Paquette Road.

Investigators said the car crossed the centre line and struck the transport. Two people in the car were killed and three passengers were transported to hospital, one with serious injuries, police said.

The road remains closed between Fields Road and Main Street in Chalk River. A detour is available for passenger vehicles but there is no detour for tractor trailers.

Snowfall in Ottawa and the valley cancelled school buses in public and Catholic school boards in the rural areas. Buses were running in Ottawa’s city limits.

Ottawa police reported 63 crashes in their jurisdiction between 5 a.m. and noon, while Gatineau police reported 13 crashes.

A winter storm caused far more damage in Quebec and Atlantic Canada, including closing the Trans-Canada Highway in eastern Quebec.
