2-5 mm of freezing rain could accumulate in Ottawa overnight
Freezing rain should change to rain Saturday morning, Environment Canada says
About two to five millimetres of freezing rain is expected to accumulate on surfaces in the Ottawa area overnight, according to a warning posted on Environment Canada's website.
The freezing rain is expected to begin late in the evening and last about two to six hours.
Fog patches are also expected to develop overnight, with the low hitting –6 C. The temperature is then expected to rise to –2 C by morning.
City crews were preparing Thursday for the melt, which could lead to a lot of pooling.
The Rideau Canal Skateway will close as of midnight Friday due to the weather, the National Capital Commission announced.
"Snow, freezing rain or water on the ice surface may hide serious deterioration of the ice thickness. For this reason, the NCC urges the public to refrain from venturing onto the Rideau Canal Skateway," the NCC posted on its website.
