Riding Info
This north Toronto riding lies between Highway 401 in the south and Steeles Avenue to the north. In the east it begins at Chelmsford Road and Bathurst Street, and stretches to Jane and Dufferin streets in the west. Within its boundaries are York University and Downsview Park.
This multiethnic riding boasts a large concentration of Jewish residents and includes the province's largest percentage of Russian speakers.
In the 1999 redistribution, the new riding of York Centre combined 69 per cent of Downsview, with 67 per cent of Wilson Heights and eight per cent of Willowdale. The 2007 redistribution kept most of the old riding intact while adding small sections of Willowdale and York West.
Population: 113,457 (2006 census; there has been no percentage change since 2001)
Political history
Longtime Liberal Monte Kwinter beat Progressive Conservative Igor Toutchinski by 5,618 votes in the 2007 election. Kwinter won landslides in both 1999 and 2003, winning by more than 11,000 votes each time.
After the redistribution created the new riding of York Centre in 1999, Downsview incumbent Annamarie Castrilli planned to run again but lost the Liberal nomination to Kwinter, who in turn prevailed in the election.
The former Wilson Heights riding was taken by Kwinter in 1985, and he held it for the next three elections.
