Riding Info
This middle- to upper-class riding runs along the shore of Lake Ontario within easy commuting distance of Toronto.
It includes all of the town of Whitby, plus the northwest section of Oshawa.
In the 1999 redistribution, the new riding of Whitby-Ajax combined two-thirds of Durham Centre with nearly one-third of Durham West and a small part of Durham East. The 2007 redistribution removed all the territory from Ajax while adding 20 per cent of the Oshawa riding and three per cent of Durham.
Population: 135,893 (2006 census; an increase of 20.5% since 2001)
Political history
Progressive Conservative Christine Elliott beat Liberal Laura Hammer by 4,134 votes in the 2007 election. She beat out Liberal Judi Longfield by 1,314 votes in a 2006 byelection in the old riding of Whitby-Oshawa.
The byelection was called after Elliott's husband, PC Jim Flaherty, gave up his seat in order to run in the federal Whitby-Oshawa riding. He won and was named finance minister under Stephen Harper.
Flaherty was first elected in 1995 in the old riding of Durham Centre and served as finance minister and deputy premier under Mike Harris.
After redistribution in 1999, Flaherty won in the newly created riding of Whitby-Ajax. He kept the seat in 2003, beating Liberal Aldo DiGiovanni by more than 11,000 votes.
