Riding Info
This riding in northeast Toronto is home to the Rouge Valley, the largest natural park in the Greater Toronto Area.
The riding extends from Steeles Avenue in the north to Sheppard Avenue and Highway 401 in the south. Its western boundary is the CN Rail line, and it stretches east to the city limits.
In the 1999 redistribution, the new Scarborough-Rouge River riding took in nearly all of the existing Scarborough North.
Population: 130,974 (2006 census an increase of 13.5% since 2001)
Political history
This riding and the old riding of Scarborough North have been in Liberal hands since 1985. Liberal Bas Balkissoon triumphed over Progressive Conservative Horace Gooden by a massive 17,347-vote margin in 2007.
Balkissoon was first elected in a November 2005 byelection in which he secured almost 58 per cent of the vote.
His predecessor was Liberal Alvin Curling, who quit in August 2005 to become ambassador to the Dominican Republic.
Curling was elected in 1985 to the old riding of Scarborough North and kept it until 1999. After the 1999 redistribution, Curling continued his winning streak in the new riding of Scarborough-Rouge River.
