Political history
Liberal Bob Chiarelli, former mayor of Ottawa and erstwhile MPP for the old riding of Ottawa West, beat out PC candidate Beth Graham in a 2010 byelection. The byelection was called after Liberal Jim Watson, elected by a 8,871-vote margin in 2007 over Tory Mike Patton, stepped down earlier that year for an ultimately successful run at the Ottawa mayoralty.
Watson was first elected in 2003 when he unseated Tory Gary Guzzo, who was elected to the riding in 1999 after the redistribution.
The Liberals had held the old Ottawa-West riding since 1987, when Chiarelli was first elected. Chiarelli held the seat until 1997, when he resigned to run for regional chair and was eventually elected mayor of Ottawa.
In the riding of Nepean, Liberal Hans Daigeler won in 1987 and 1990, but was defeated in 1995 by Tory John Baird.
