Riding Info
This urban riding occupies the southern portion of Hamilton, bounded by the Niagara Escarpment in the north and the city limits in the south..
The primary employment sectors are manufacturing and the service industry.
The new Hamilton Mountain riding, which was formed in 1999's redistribution, adds one fifth of the old Hamilton West riding to all of the former riding of Hamilton Mountain.
Population: 116,434 (2006 census; an increase of 0.6% since 2001)
Political history
Liberal Sophia Aggelonitis took the riding in 2007 after beating New Democrat Bryan Adamczyk by 1,734 votes. The previous MPP for the riding, Liberal Marie Bountrogianni recided not to seek re-election.
Bountrogianni had held the seat since 1999, when she beat Progressive Conservative Trevor Pettit. Pettit was elected in 1995 after beating the NDP's Brian Charlton.
Charlton was first elected in 1977, putting an end to 10 years of PC rule in Hamilton Mountain. Charlton would be re-elected four times, and would serve as energy ministrer and government house leader in Bob Rae's government.
