District Profile:
The Range Lake district is made up of newer middle- and higher-income neighbourhoods, trailer courts and industrial lots on the west side of Yellowknife. It includes the Stanton Territorial Hospital, Range Lake North Elementary School, and the commercial district along Old Airport Road. Highway 3 forms its northern border, while Old Airport Road is to the east and Findlayson Drive North is to the south and west. Yellowknife, with a population of 18,700, is the Northwest Territories' capital and by far its largest community.
Political History:
Sandy Lee was re-elected in 2007. She had won in 2003 and in 1999 when the seat was newly created. She stepped down earlier this year to run in the federal election and the legislative assembly chose to keep the seat vacant as this election was forthcoming.
Voter turnout in 2003 barely reached 50 per cent, but was relatively high in 1999, at 70 per cent.
