Current MLA:
Floyd Roland, premier, minister of Executive, minister of Aboriginal Affairs and Intergovernmental Relations, minister responsible for the Northwest Territories Power Corporation, minister responsible for the Status of Women
District Profile:
The Boot Lake district encompasses the south half of Inuvik (pop. 3,484), and tends to be more affluent and less aboriginal than the northern half. Situated on the East Branch of the Mackenzie River not far from the Arctic Ocean, Inuvik is the business, tourism, and government hub of the Mackenzie Delta, and is Canada's largest community north of the Arctic Circle.
The surrounding landscape is flat, scrubby boreal forest, not far from the tree line.
The Dempster Highway links the community by road to Fort McPherson, Tsiigehtchic and the Yukon.
For the past 25 years, oil and gas exploration in the Beaufort Sea has kept Inuvik on an economic roller coaster. In March 2011, the National Energy Board granted final approval for the Mackenzie Valley natural gas pipeline after the federal cabinet signed off on the long-delayed $16.2-billion project.
Political History:
In 2007 Roland won a fourth consecutive term – his second consecutive win by acclamation – as a member of the 16th Legislative Assembly, and on Oct. 18, 2007 he was chosen to be premier of the Northwest Territories. In May 2011 Roland announced he would not seek re-election.
In 2003 he was acclaimed. Roland also won the district in 1999. The auto mechanic and former town councillor first came to power in 1995, ousting incumbent MLA Fred Koe. Voter turnout here has tended to be moderate. Prior to 1999, this district and the Inuvik Twin Lakes comprised a single district.
