A woman airlifted to hospital Tuesday afternoon after a crash on Highway 102 near Elmsdale suffered life threatening injuries, say police.

A LifeFlight helicopter was dispatched to the scene of a two-car crash on northbound Highway 102 between exits 7 and 8 around 3:30 p.m.

Police closed the highway between exits 7 and 8 near Elmsdale so the helicopter could land.

The preliminary investigation revealed the woman, who was driving a black SUV, was travelling northbound on Highway 102 when she drove into the back of a yellow transportation department truck that was painting lines on the road.

RCMP Cpl. Scott MacRae said a woman was trapped in the SUV. Emergency and fire crews extracted the woman and she was flown to hospital.

Drivers were advised to take exit 7 to the old Highway 2 in order to avoid the stretch of the 102 that was closed.

Police said northbound traffic have begun to move after they reopened one lane on the northbound 102.
