A man out for a walk helped save an elderly woman after she fell off her electric scooter and into the Bedford Basin on Wednesday morning.

Const. Dianne Woodsworth said police got a call from a concerned citizen around 10:10 a.m. in DeWolf Park.

Fortunately, a rescuer was nearby.

"We heard her calling," said Leone Winters.

George Grant said he went over and helped the woman get out of the water, using a cane to pull her up.

"I don’t know how she got over there. I think the wind must have blown her over. She was paddling and when I got there she had the rope, there was a rope hanging down in the water and she had that wrapped around her," he said.

She was taken to hospital by ambulance for an examination.
