Nearly 10,000 Nova Scotia Power customers were without electricity Monday morning after a night of high winds.

Hardest hit is Cape Breton, with 823 customers powerless in the Cheticamp area, 1,044 out in the Inverness area, and 1,019 out in the Sydney area.

As many as 9,795 customers were without power across the province, but that figure was down to 6,826 by 9:15 a.m.

Also Monday, the Cape-Breton-Victoria Regional School Board cancelled school for all students and employees. The Strait Regional School Board cancelled classes at several schools.

Nova Scotia Power crews are working on repairing the outages and expect to have most repaired by 10 a.m.

Bad weather in New Brunswick led Air Canada to cancel its morning flights from Halifax to Saint John, Fredericton and Moncton.

Marine Atlantic will not sail this morning out of North Sydney or Port Aux Basques.

Environment Canada says a slow-moving storm is expected to impact all four Atlantic provinces Monday and Tuesday with a mix of freezing rain, snow, and in some cases, ice pellets.‚Äč

The agency's public weather alert map for Nova Scotia is entirely red with freezing rain and wind alerts.
