Staying in residence is a sure-fire way to meet new people, but if you're staying in housing off campus, that can be tough.

Here are some suggestions on places you can meet new friends:

Get active and meet new friends

Dalhousie University, Saint Mary’s University, the University of King`s College and Mount Saint Vincent University all offer seasonal intramural sports. There are sports to suit all skill levels and it's a great way to get out, be active and make new friends.

The Halifax Sport and Social Club also offers a wide variety of sports and activities during the fall and winter.

If sports aren’t your thing

Dalhousie, SMU, The Mount, NSCAD, King's and NSCC all offer a variety of clubs and societies students can join. From swing dancing, to anime film clubs, there's a lot to choose from. If you don't see a society that suits you, start your own.

If you’re looking for a place to meet people off campus, the Board Room Games Cafe has a vault of more than 400 games. It’s a great way to expand your gaming horizons and potentially meet new friends.

Harnessing the power of the internet

In addition to the various online dating sites, the smartphone app Tinder lets you interact with people in your community. You don't necessarily have to be looking for love to meet people using this app.

Kijiji has a section dedicated to 'friendship networking' but like anything where anonymity and strangers are involved, use caution and agree to meet in busy, public places.

If you just need someone to talk to

Starting at a new school can be intimidating at the best of times.

If you're having trouble adjusting, stressed out, or just really need to talk to somebody, don’t be afraid to contact on-campus counsellors.

Whether you want to talk about your career path, or discuss personal problems, you don't have to deal with it by yourself.

Here's a list of links to counselling services available at your Halifax school.
