Halifax Regional Council has voted in favour of looking into expanding its weekly compost pickup to the outlying parts of the municipality next summer.

Food waste is collected on a weekly basis during the summer in urban and suburban areas of the city, reducing flies, maggots and odours. The green bins are picked up every two weeks in the rural areas.

On Tuesday councillors agreed to weekly pickups next July and August for an extra $52,000.

A final approval vote will take place during next year's budget debate.
