A 20-year-old man suspected of violently sexually assaulting a teenaged girl has turned himself in to Halifax police.

Officers said Caiden Dante Wournell came to police headquarters around 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday.

Wournell has been charged with sexual assault, robbery and breach of probation.

The events that led to the attack began at the Dartmouth bridge bus terminal Saturday night where the 17-year-old victim saw the suspect for the first time, she told police.

He started walking with her but when they reached the Dartmouth Common near Alderney Drive and Wyse Road, the victim told police the situation turned ugly.

Const. Pierre Bourdages said the sexual assault involved forced penetration.

Police said they will now interview Wournell.
