Former Nova Scotia MLA Trevor Zinck plans to plead not guilty to a charge of impaired driving, according to his lawyer.

He was not in court on Monday morning to answer to the charge, so his lawyer Lyle Howe indicated Zinck's intention to plead.

"I'm appearing on his behalf with instructions to enter a not guilty plea," he said.

Howe said he expects the trial will be held in about nine months.

Zinck was arrested in October.
