Cape Breton's Carmen Townsend was the big winner at the Music Nova Scotia Awards in Yarmouth Sunday night.

The rock musician won four of the five categories she was nominated for, including Recording of the Year for Waitin' and Seein.'

Townsend said it was the "metal heads" who nurtured her talent when she started playing guitar as a teenager.

"They brought me their guitar magazines and taught me how to play tab. I just want to thank all those guys in high school that were my best friends," she said in a speech.

Townsend is planning a European tour this winter. She's already working on her next album.

Singer-songwriter David Myles and the hip hop band Three Sheet won two awards each.

Liverpool will host the awards ceremony next year. The event will be held in Sydney in 2013 and Truro in 2014.
