Thousands of chickens die in Waterville fire
Atlantic Poultry barn badly damaged by fire
Thousands of chickens died in a barn fire in Waterville, N.S., on Saturday night.
The two-storey barn on Bond Road had about 10,000 chickens. The fire started around 10:30 p.m. and engulfed part of the Atlantic Poultry facility.
"When we arrived, there was a lot of heavy smoke coming from the chicken barn and it eventually broke through the roof," said firefighter Jeff Greer. "We saw smoke and flame."
Crews from nine fire departments put out the worst of the fire Saturday, but battled hot spots Sunday.
About half the chickens were behind a firebreak and survived the blaze. They're being moved to another facility Sunday,
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
