Roads and yards were flooded in Sydney on Wednesday morning after heavy rain melted mountains of snow.

Water coming up through manhole covers in many low-lying areas added to the deluge.

The drainage system is overwhelmed by the huge amount of water pouring through it after 48 millimetres of rain fell Tuesday and melted more snow.

Several streets along Wash Brook and Muggah Creek in Sydney were closed on Wednesday. Prince Street was closed for a time, but has since reopened.

Other streets have turned into low rivers, creating hazards for drivers. 

A crew with the Cape Breton Island Housing Authority had been to 16 public housing units by 8 a.m. 

A Whitney Pier home had a metre of water in the basement.
