A Nova Scotia man is facing several charges including impaired driving after a head-on crash shut down a major street in Dartmouth early Sunday morning.
The crash sent two people to hospital, including a taxi driver.
At 2:30 a.m. on Sunday a 58-year-old woman driving a taxi was stopped at Pleasant Street facing north.
RCMP Sgt. Reid McCoombs said an overloaded BMW sedan, carrying five passengers, came speeding around a corner, attempting to turn right onto Pleasant Street from Portland.
The car crashed into the Impala taxi head-on, causing major damage to both vehicles, police said.
The 29-year-old BMW driver was arrested at the scene for impaired driving causing bodily harm.
A 32-year-old woman in the BMW’s back seat sustained serious but non-life threatening injuries and was sent to hospital, said police.
The woman driving the taxi also received serious but non-life threatening injuries and remains in hospital as well.
“It appears everyone in the vehicle had been drinking at the time so had they taken alternate measures to get rides home this could have been avoided,” said McCoombs.
Pleasant Street between Portland and St. Georges Lane was shut down for a number of hours while police investigated.
