Pat Skinner at a Martin Luther King Jr. Day event. (stfx.ca)A prominent human rights advocate and leader in Nova Scotia's black community has died.
The family of Pat Skinner of Antigonish confirmed the 78-year-old died in a crash in James River on Friday afternoon.
Police said a woman was pulling her Volvo S60 onto Highway 104 when a Honda CRV struck her.
She died at the scene.
In 2006, Skinner was awarded the Nova Scotia Human Rights Award for her work providing housing in the Antigonish and Guysborough counties.
She was a founding member of the Nova Scotia Black Cultural Society and the Antigonish Human Rights Affirmative Action Committee.
She was appointed to the Nova Scotia Human Rights Commission in 2010.
