A man from Stewiacke, N.S., says he barely escaped death when he was pulled from his burning home by his dog on Wednesday night.

Mike Cameron was fast asleep on Wednesday evening when he woke up with a jolt.

His dog, an energetic border collie mix, named Charlie had jumped on his chest.

'There's nobody like Charlie, nobody. He's staying with me forever.'—Mike Cameron, man saved by dog

It took Cameron a minute to realize what was going on.

"I woke up and it was pretty black in the house, the house was engulfed in flames."

Cameron frantically searched for his two cats.

He went in and out of the house as it burned.

After several unsuccessful attempts to find them, Cameron collapsed near the door.

Charlie quickly arrived by his side.

"He grabbed me by the shoulders and hauled me," said Cameron.

Not only did the dog save Cameron, but he said he believes Charlie herded the cats outside.

He said Charlie deserves an award for saving his life.
