Drivers across Nova Scotia were warned to drive carefully Tuesday as a mix of snow and rain made for a slushy and messy morning commute.

A section of Highway 103 inbound, between Exits 4 and 5, was closed for several hours Tuesday morning after a crash. Nova Scotia RCMP said traffic was being rerouted onto St. Margaret's Bay Road.

There's no word on the extent of injuries.

The Halifax Regional School Board closed three families of schools due to road conditions — Duncan MacMillan, Eastern Shore and Musquodoboit Rural. All other schools in the Halifax Regional School Board remain open.

"They need to cancel school. There's no way to cross those streets over there, I had to walk right through the puddles. There's no intersection there, there's a snowbank so there's nowhere to go but climb snowbanks," said a pedestrian crossing Bell Road in front of Citadel High School.

"That's like a lake over there. The kids will never get through this mess to get to school."

The Strait Regional School Board and Cape Breton-Victoria Regional School Board closed all of its schools on Tuesday due to road conditions.

Drivers in the Halifax area reported seeing standing water on many roads, including Robie and Young streets. There are puddles and streams on top of snow and ice as many storm drains were blocked by snow from the weekend storm.

Catherine Yetman told CBC News the water was knee-deep on Forest Hills Parkway.

"My girlfriend had to turn around twice and get alternate routes because she couldn't get through. It's bad," she said.

"The walking is treacherous. Somebody's going to get hit by a car because there's nowhere to walk except for in the middle of the street."
