A taxi driver who was robbed at knifepoint earlier this week says not a week goes by without a taxi driver getting robbed or assaulted in Halifax.

"I was really, really scared, to be honest with you," said the cab driver, who only wanted to be identified as Jaber.

"He takes a knife and points it right at me. There's nobody around, nothing."

Jaber said he picked up the passenger at the Atlantic Superstore on Joseph Howe Drive early Monday morning and the man asked to be taken to Evans Avenue in Fairview.

"He had no groceries on him so I said, 'Just off work?' I thought he was one of those guys that stocks the shelves and stuff. He said, 'No, I went there to grab something to eat,'" said Jaber.

"I knew he was up to something no good but pulling a knife or a gun, I never even thought of that."

Jaber, who had just started working the night shift the previous week, said he didn't want to kick the man out because the ride was so short. He continued to his passenger's destination.

"I heard change. It was a key or whatever, something was in there. He takes a knife and points it right at me," said Jaber.

Jaber said the man demanded he hand over his cellphone and the $160 he had on him. The man ran away.

Jaber wasn't hurt.

Dave Buffett, the secretary of the Halifax Taxi Drivers Owners Association, said Jaber's scenario is familiar to many cab drivers in Halifax.

"I think that's very unfortunate because a person shouldn't go to work and question, 'Is this the night I'm going to get knifed or punched and kicked?'" said Buffett.

A 37-year-old Halifax man has been charged in Jaber's case, as well as another taxi driver who reported being robbed less than 24 hours later.

The man has been charged with two counts each of robbery, possession of a dangerous weapon and carrying a concealed weapon.
