A man in Guysborough County is trying to stop a proposed aggregate quarry in his neighbourhood and says blasting from two existing quarries has already caused cracks in the foundation of some homes.

John Clancy, who lives in Mulgrave, wants the local town council to reject an application from Zutphen Construction to rezone four hectares of land on Main Street.

"There is a problem here and there's nobody listening to me," he said.

Clancy, who lives near the proposed site, is going around the town with a petition to stop the development and has collected more than 175 signatures.

"When I went around with the petition, there's at least a dozen homes that have problems already with the foundations because of the blasting from the quarry that's out there already," he told CBC News.

"All I ask the mayor and the town council is go out and talk to these people that have homes near the quarry and then if they decide to go ahead with this, then go ahead."

The proposed quarry site is currently zoned for residential use.

Zutphen Construction's application to have the area rezoned is before the town council. The company declined to make a comment on the proposed quarry.

"We had the first reading of it, then we're going to have a public meeting if everything goes good to see what the people say there," said Lorne MacDonald, the mayor of Mulgrave.

MacDonald said he's aware of Clancy's petition and is keeping an open mind.
