Work has halted at a construction site in the Burnside Industrial Park because a 58-year-old man died after falling from a roof over the weekend, CBC News has learned.

Merle Weichel was taken to the Queen Elizabeth II Health Sciences Centre on Saturday and died later that same day.

He was employed by Marid Industries Ltd., a steel fabricator based in Windsor Junction.

The Occupational Health and Safety division of the province's Department of Labour and Advanced Education has issued a stop work order at 77 Burbidge Ave. in the Burnside Industrial Park.

Marilyn More, the Minister of Labour and Advanced Education, said the investigation continues. Her department has not issued a release about the fatality.

Halifax Regional Police Const. Pierre Bourdages said the department's policy is to respond to all serious workplace accidents or fatalities.

But when the call came in on Saturday, the dispatcher sent an ambulance based on the information provided, he said.

"I know one call was placed. With the information provided to the call taker, the call taker determined that this was a non-police event, then forwarded the caller to EHS and followed up with the injured party at the scene," Bourdages told CBC News.

"After reviewing the incident and with hindsight, we realized that it would have been preferable for us to have been there early on. We're still following up with this investigation."

Because Halifax Regional Police officers did not go to the scene of the incident, they did not investigate or issue a news release indicating a man had died after an industrial accident.

Bourdages said they learned about Weichel's death from the medical examiner's office on Saturday night.
