A nine-year-old girl is dead after being hit by an alleged impaired driver in the Mount Pleasant area of Lunenburg County Saturday near noon.
Police said the girl was pronounced dead at the scene.
Cpl. Dyson Smith, with the Bridgewater RCMP, said a 30-year-old woman was arrested for impaired driving at the scene and taken into custody. No charges have been laid.
Both the victim and the woman who was arrested are from the Mount Pleasant area. Police said speed was not a factor, nor was the weather.
"It wasn't any speed involved, or anything like that," said Smith. "It doesn't appear to be weather-involved."
Two other children were with the woman in the minivan at the time of the accident. They are now with relatives.
Smith said the circumstances of the accident and especially the young age of the victim, makes this death particularly difficult to deal with.
"It's an unfortunate event and it's very sad for all parties, including the police that had to attend," he said. "As you can imagine, it makes it a very difficult scene for anyone to have to attend to and investigate, including the paramedics and police."
The investigation is ongoing.
