The victim of a hit-and-run accident in Brookside earlier this week said he never saw what hit him and didn't have any indication a vehicle was approaching.

Gerald and Joan Pippy were walking along the side of the road on Lakewood Drive on Monday night when they were hit from behind.

Gerald Pippy, 71, was seriously injured and told CBC News he expects to spend another few days in hospital.

His wife was not badly hurt.

"I have a broken tibia in my left leg below the knee and I have a broken ankle on my right leg. I have a bad concussion, a big gash on my head, lots of blood," Pippy said Wednesday.

"I got a shoulder that's kind of stiff and sore and also my back is stiff and sore."

Pippy said although he and his wife normally walk in the opposite direction of traffic, they made an exception on Monday because of the curve on that particular section of Lakewood Drive.

There are no sidewalks, so the Pippys were walking along the edge of the pavement. Both were wearing reflective vests and Gerald Pippy was walking on the outside of his wife, about one foot back.

"I usually do that so I can step behind her if a car does come," he said.

Pippy said he didn't have any indication a vehicle was approaching behind them.

"I should have seen his lights reflecting off my wife's vest. There was no car lights," he said.

"Nothing. I saw nothing, I heard nothing and bang, I just was out and gone."

Pippy said about five minutes before he was hit, he and his wife heard squealing tires further down the road. He doesn't know if there's any connection between that and his accident.

Police are still searching for the driver. They have no description of the vehicle or the driver.
